“허무로다, 허무! 코헬렛이 말한다. 허무로다, 허무! 모든 것이 허무로다!”

“Vanity of vanities, says Qoheleth, vanity of vanities! All things are vanity!”

오늘 저는 굳이 영어 성서의 말씀을 같이 들여다봤습니다.

‘Vanity’란 말을 가지고 오늘 얘기를 시작하고 싶어서입니다.

Vanity란 말에는 우리의 허무와 같이 공허함, 무가치, 하찮음, 알맹이 없음,

덧없음, 헛됨, 쓸데없음의 뜻도 있지만 허영심이나 자만심의 뜻도 있습니다.

모든 것이 허무한데 허영심이 있다면 그것은 우리의 허무함을 가중할 뿐이지요.

그래서 저는 오늘 코헬렛을 묵상하며 또한 <Dust in the wind>도 떠올립니다.

이 노래의 가사는 이렇습니다.

우리에게 허무감은 어떤 면에서 부정적인 느낌입니다.

그러나 허무 관상은 제 생각에 아주 좋은 것입니다.

있던 것이 없음,

있어야 할 것이 없음,

알맹이는 없고 껍데기만 있음,

허무나 허무함을 직시하는 것이기 때문입니다.
